Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, a Republican, has signed a bill banning sanctuary cities in his state.
The move is symbolic at this point since the state does not currently have any sanctuary cities.
Gianforte said after signing the bill into law “we are a nation of laws, and immigration laws will be enforced in Montana.”
Per the Associated Press, “the bill will require state and local law enforcement to comply with federal immigration law and empower the state’s attorney general to pursue civil action against jurisdictions that do not comply — including fines and withholding state grant funds.”
Former Democrat Governor Steve Bullock vetoed a similar proposal in 2019.
